The High Court has directed the local administration in Muradnagar, Comilla, to immediately stop the illegal cutting of soil from agricultural land. The court's order brings relief to local farmers who have been protesting against this practice for a long time. A section of influential locals had reportedly been forcibly extracting topsoil from these fertile lands.
According to local residents, excavators were being used to cut soil from various crop fields in Muradnagar. This practice not only destroys the fertility of the soil but also puts adjacent lands at risk of collapsing. Despite protests from local farmers, the influential group continued their activities, prompting a writ petition to be filed in court.
The court issued a rule on this matter and asked the local administration to report on the steps taken to stop the soil cutting. The Deputy Commissioner (DC), Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local police station have been directed to execute the order and take legal action against the perpetrators.
Environmentalists and local citizens have welcomed the High Court's decision. They emphasized that strict monitoring is essential to ensure the order is properly implemented on the ground. Without regular vigilance by the administration, the illegal activity might resume, threatening the region's agricultural future.
