Bagerhat Medical Foundation Meets LGRD Minister to Boost Rural Healthcare Infrastructure

The Secretary of the Bagerhat Medical Foundation recently held a courtesy meeting with the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives to discuss grassroots healthcare improvement and infrastructural coordination. Held at the Secretariat, the discussion centered on the existing healthcare challenges in the coastal district of Bagerhat and the pivotal role of local government institutions in addressing them. To deliver primary healthcare to the doorsteps of remote populations, joint efforts between government initiatives and private or social organizations have become increasingly vital. This meeting is expected to strengthen mutual cooperation between the local government administration and non-governmental medical service organizations. Both parties particularly agreed on the necessity of raising health awareness in rural communities and ensuring a conducive working environment for physicians.

In disaster-prone and salinity-affected coastal regions like Bagerhat, accessing quality healthcare remains a significant challenge for the general public. Due to geographical adversities, communication to rural community clinics and upazila health complexes is frequently disrupted, making emergency medical care difficult to obtain. Although rural roads and drainage systems have been developed under the Local Government Division in the past, a coordinated connection with healthcare infrastructure has often been lacking. In this context, policy support from the Ministry of Local Government will inject new momentum into voluntary organizations like the Bagerhat Medical Foundation to run free medical camps and ambulance services in remote areas. Furthermore, conducting health awareness programs through local Union Parishads and Upazila Parishads will contribute to the sustainable development of rural public health.

During the meeting, the Minister highly praised the humanitarian and social activities of the Bagerhat Medical Foundation and assured necessary assistance from the ministry. He noted that local government institutions are being made more active to improve rural healthcare quality, and rural road connectivity is being modernized to ensure patients can reach hospitals quickly. On the other hand, the Foundation's Secretary presented a plan to establish a modern specialized hospital in a remote area of Bagerhat and requested the allocation of government khas land for this purpose. The Minister promised to instruct relevant officials to assess the feasibility of this project through the local administration and take prompt action. Additionally, it was stated in the meeting that directives would be issued to local government representatives to ensure the housing and security of physicians at the local level.
