Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the construction project of the Muhuri-Kahua river dam to prevent erosion in Feni. The Minister of Water Resources confirmed this development. Once constructed, this dam will protect the homes and agricultural lands of thousands of local residents from devastating floods. For a long time, locals have been demanding a permanent dam to stop the river erosion.
According to local administration sources, every monsoon, flash floods from upstream India breach the embankments of the Muhuri and Kahua rivers, submerging vast areas. This causes massive crop damage worth millions of taka and leaves many homeless. To solve this issue permanently, the government has initiated a mega project which is scheduled to begin soon.
The announcement of this project has brought immense relief to the local communities. Local farmers expressed that a strong and sustainable dam would allow them to cultivate their lands without the constant fear of floods. The Ministry of Water Resources stated that modern technology will be utilized to ensure the durability of the dam against heavy upstream flows.
Full-scale construction work is expected to begin immediately after the Prime Minister's formal inauguration. The local administration and the Water Development Board will jointly supervise the project. Timely completion of this project is expected to end the long-standing suffering of the people in Feni's Parshuram and Fulgazi sub-districts, boosting the local economy.
“The annual breaching of the Muhuri and Kahua river embankments has long plagued Feni's agriculture and economy. This new government initiative is a highly positive step. However, strict monitoring is essential to ensure the project is completed on time and meets quality standards.”
