Ferries suspended but sea trucks run, causing passenger anger

Ferry services on the Bhola-Lakshmipur river route have been suddenly suspended, leaving hundreds of passengers and cargo vehicles stranded on both sides. However, despite the ferry suspension, risky sea trucks and engine-run trawlers continue to operate. Passengers have expressed anger over the suspension of safer ferries while risky alternatives remain active.

Local sources said ferry operations on this route had been disrupted for the past few days. The terminal authorities claimed that dropping water levels in certain parts of the river made ferry movement difficult. However, passengers alleged that the suspension was intentionally created to benefit trawler and sea truck operators, as commuters are now forced to pay higher fares.

Several stranded passengers at the terminal shared that they needed to travel to Dhaka or Chattogram for urgent matters. The suspension has left them in a difficult position. Crossing the river by trawler is highly risky, especially for women and children. Furthermore, trawler operators are reportedly charging double the usual fare.

Regarding the issue, terminal officials stated that dredging work is underway to resolve the navigability crisis, and ferry services will resume soon. They added that local administration has been informed about the risky trawler operations, and passenger safety is being prioritized.
