Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market to be Relocated to Gabtoli

The wholesale kitchen market of Karwan Bazar, one of the busiest areas in Dhaka, is set to be relocated to Gabtoli. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has initiated the relocation process. After years of discussions, a consensus has finally been reached between the traders and the administration to move the market, which is expected to reduce the persistent traffic congestion in Karwan Bazar.

Since Karwan Bazar is located in the center of Dhaka, thousands of cargo trucks enter the area daily, causing severe traffic gridlock across the city. To address this issue, plans were made years ago to move the market to the city's periphery. A modern market facility has been constructed in the Aminbazar area of Gabtoli to rehabilitate the traders.

City Corporation officials stated that all necessary facilities will be ensured for the traders at the new location. Although some traders initially opposed the decision, they are now preparing for the move. The traders have demanded adequate space and security to run their businesses smoothly at the new site.

The relocation process will be completed in phases over the next few months. In the first phase, the raw vegetable wholesale shops will be moved, followed by other shops. Urban planners believe that if this plan succeeds, the Karwan Bazar area can be transformed into a modern and aesthetic commercial hub.
