A sudden attack took place on a peaceful human chain organized by the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BSD) on Sadar Road in Barishal. The program was organized to demand a reduction in the prices of daily essentials. Witnesses said a group of youths carrying sticks suddenly attacked the activists, causing panic in the area.
According to witnesses and local sources, BSD activists gathered on Sadar Road in the morning as per their pre-announced program. As they stood with banners and started delivering speeches, a group of people came from behind and attacked them. The attackers tore the banners and beat up the activists, injuring six on the spot.
Local BSD leaders expressed deep anger following the attack. They alleged that the attack was planned to disrupt a peaceful democratic movement. Police arrived at the scene immediately after the incident to bring the situation under control. Police said they are trying to identify the attackers and legal action will be taken.
In protest of the attack, BSD has called for a demonstration rally in the city this afternoon. They warned that if the attackers are not arrested within 24 hours, larger programs will be announced. Currently, additional police have been deployed in the area, and the situation remains calm.
“Attacks on political programs are a major blow to democratic rights. Such violence against peaceful movements addressing public demands is unacceptable. The administration must investigate quickly and bring the perpetrators to justice to prevent future incidents.”
