A tragic incident has occurred in Mymensingh's Nandail upazila. The bodies of two children, who went missing while playing in the afternoon, were recovered from a pond at night. The deceased children have been identified as Hasan (5) and Marium (4), who were cousins.
According to family sources, the two children were playing in the yard yesterday afternoon. At one point, they could no longer be seen. Family members searched nearby houses and various places but found no trace of them. Later, announcements were also made via loudspeakers in the area.
Finally, around 10 PM, neighbors noticed two bodies floating in a pond near the house. Local residents then recovered the bodies of the two children from the pond. Upon receiving the news, the police visited the scene. As the family had no complaints, permission was granted to bury the bodies without an autopsy.
The continuous deaths of children by drowning have cast a shadow of grief over the area. Local conscious citizens emphasize that young children should always be kept under close supervision if there are ponds or water bodies near the house. A little carelessness can lead to such major accidents.
“Child drowning incidents are rising alarmingly in Bangladesh. Lack of awareness and absence of safety barriers around water bodies lead to such recurring accidents. It is crucial to teach children how to swim in rural areas and for parents to remain more vigilant.”
