Transport workers and local residents have blocked the highway in Barishal, halting all bus services. Due to this sudden blockade, ordinary passengers have been facing immense suffering since morning. No long-distance or local buses have left the terminal.
The blockade began this morning in the Nathullabad bus terminal area on the Barishal-Dhaka highway. Workers took to the streets to protest a local incident and certain administrative decisions. They blocked the road by parking buses crosswise, causing long traffic jams with hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides.
As bus services remain suspended, crowds of passengers are increasing at railway stations and launch terminals. Many are forced to travel in parts using three-wheelers or rickshaws. However, passengers complained that drivers are demanding fares several times higher than usual. Police and local administration have started talks with labor leaders to bring the situation under control.
Transport owners and labor leaders stated that they will continue their protest until their demands are met. Meanwhile, the police said they are trying to clear the road quickly to reduce public suffering. It is feared that if the issue is not resolved by noon, the suffering of commuters may increase further.
“The culture of suddenly blocking highways and suspending bus services has become a major source of suffering for ordinary people. Holding the public hostage to realize demands must stop. The administration should find a permanent solution through swift dialogue.”
