Local poultry farmers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to protest the abnormal price hike of poultry feed and chicks. Hundreds of farmers took to the streets in the morning, halting traffic. This led to severe traffic congestion extending several kilometers on both sides of the highway, causing immense suffering to commuters.
Protesting farmers stated that the price of poultry feed has increased by 500 to 800 BDT per sack over the last few months. Concurrently, the price of day-old chicks has nearly doubled. However, the selling prices of eggs and chickens in the market have not increased proportionally, causing farmers to incur heavy losses. Many have been forced to shut down their farms.
Upon receiving the news, local administration and police rushed to the spot. They tried to persuade the farmers to clear the road. Police officials assured the farmers that they would discuss the feed price issue with higher government authorities and feed manufacturing companies. Following this assurance, the farmers lifted the blockade around noon.
Poultry industry entrepreneurs warn that if feed prices continue to rise, it could trigger a major crisis in the national egg and chicken market. They emphasized the need for government intervention to protect this sector, which meets the protein demands of common people. Without immediate price control, many small-scale farmers risk going out of business permanently.
“The rise in poultry feed prices poses a significant threat to the poultry industry. If small-scale farmers shut down their farms due to losses, the prices of eggs and chicken will rise further in the market. This will make it difficult for common people to meet their nutritional needs. The government must take immediate action to break syndicates and control feed prices.”
