A series of clashes and chases took place between garment factory workers and the police in the EPZ area of Chittagong over unpaid wages. The trouble began this morning when workers blocked the main road to protest. Tensions escalated when police arrived and attempted to clear the road for traffic.
According to local sources, workers of a garment factory had not received their salaries for the past few months. After failing to get a solution from the factory management, they took to the streets this morning. Around 9:00 AM, they gathered at the EPZ intersection, halting all vehicle movement on the busy road.
To control the situation, police went to the spot and tried to persuade the workers to leave the road. However, the agitated workers started throwing bricks at the police. In response, police used batons and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. At least 10 people, including workers and police officers, were injured.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area following the clash. Although the situation is currently calm, tension still prevails. The police and factory authorities have assured the workers that their outstanding dues will be cleared soon. Police are working to restore normal traffic flow on the road.
