Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has strongly criticized the State Minister for Foreign Affairs' angry reaction to questions regarding citizenship. In a statement, the organization said that such behavior from a responsible government minister when faced with public questions is reminiscent of authoritarian rule. They emphasized that this does not align with civic rights in a democratic country.
The criticism followed a recent event where the State Minister expressed anger when asked about citizenship issues, sparking widespread debate. TIB pointed out that government representatives, funded by public taxpayers, are accountable to the people. Getting angry or dismissing questions simply because they are uncomfortable sets a poor precedent.
TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman stated that independent journalism and the public's right to information must be respected. Asking questions on any issue is the right of the media and citizens. Showing anger instead of respecting this right is nothing but an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.
The anti-corruption watchdog urged the government to move away from such behavior and become more tolerant and responsible. TIB believes that to strengthen democratic practices, leaders must develop the mindset to accept criticism. They also advised taking caution to prevent such incidents in the future.
