All import and export trade between India and Bangladesh through the Benapole land port will remain suspended on Wednesday. The port authorities and the C&F Agents Association jointly confirmed this decision. However, despite the suspension of trade, the movement of passport-holding passengers through the Benapole international checkpost will continue as usual.
Trade operations through the Benapole-Petrapole border are typically suspended during public holidays or major festivals. Due to Wednesday's closure, hundreds of cargo trucks are expected to remain stranded on both sides of the border. Traders mentioned that regular customs clearance and import-export activities will resume in full swing on Thursday morning.
Port officials stated that extra security measures will be in place to prevent any security issues during the suspension of trade. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India's Border Security Force (BSF) will maintain strict vigilance along the border. Additionally, emergency customs operations may continue on a limited scale.
As Benapole is the largest land port in the country, even a single day's closure results in significant revenue loss. However, traders have made preparations to expedite cargo clearance once operations resume. The port authorities plan to work overtime on Thursday to clear any potential backlog of goods.
“Benapole land port handles massive trade volumes daily. A single day of closure not only causes revenue loss but also risks damaging perishable goods. Establishing a special mechanism to clear emergency and perishable items even on holidays is highly recommended.”
