In Dhaka, area-based weekly holidays are maintained for shops and shopping malls to reduce traffic congestion and save electricity. According to this rule, shops, malls, and commercial establishments in several parts of the capital remain closed every Wednesday. Specifically, major markets in Gulshan, Banani, Badda, Rampura, and Pragati Sarani are closed on this day.
Among the major shopping malls closed on Wednesday are Jamuna Future Park, Gulshan DCC Market, Banani Super Market, Rampura Bazar, and Badda Bazar. Additionally, general shops and retail outlets in Pragati Sarani, Kuril, Nootun Bazar, Vatara, and Satarkul areas also remain closed. However, daily essential shops and kitchen markets usually remain open after noon.
This weekly holiday schedule is determined by the Dhaka City Corporation regulations. Adhering to this rule not only allows local business owners and staff to rest but also helps shoppers plan their visits in advance. Nevertheless, emergency services such as pharmacies and restaurants are exempted from this weekly closure.
Different areas of Dhaka observe their weekly holidays on different days of the week. Therefore, it is advisable to check the holiday schedule of a specific area before heading out for shopping. This simple step can save commuters from unnecessary travel hassles and waste of time.
“The area-based market closure system in the capital is effective in managing traffic. However, citizens often face hassles when they visit markets on closed days due to a lack of awareness. Regular dissemination of this information will save time and travel costs for the general public.”
