The prices of daily essentials have increased significantly in the market. Under these circumstances, government employees are struggling to run their families with their current salaries. Low-income employees, in particular, are facing the hardest times, leading to urgent demands for the implementation of a new 9th pay scale.
The last 8th pay scale in Bangladesh was implemented in 2015. Even after nine years, no new salary structure has been announced. Employee organizations have drafted a new pay scale proposal that focuses on increasing salaries and eliminating existing disparities.
The proposed new structure suggests reducing the current 20 grades to 10. It demands a minimum basic salary of 22,000 BDT for the lowest grade and over 80,000 BDT for the highest grade. Additionally, there are demands for dearness allowances and other benefits.
Leaders of the government employees' coordination council have submitted memorandums to high-level government officials regarding this issue. General employees hope the government will take the matter seriously and form a new pay commission soon. However, it remains to be seen what decision the government will make considering the current economic situation.
“Given the rising cost of living, the demand for a salary hike by government employees is logical. However, the government must make a balanced decision considering the current economic pressure and budget constraints. Reducing grades and raising salaries for low-income employees could significantly reduce disparities.”
